‘Brother Rothar’ loosely translates to ‘Bike Brother’ in Irish and is a project that began in the summer of 2020.
Although a relatively late bloomer to the two-wheeled world, bicycle building and customization is something that has captivated me for years. Particularly in the realm of fixed-gear and bike messenger culture. Alongside this, one of the predominant drivers behind this project is my deep interest in preserving, repairing and salvaging things.
The mass produced, fast fashion and throw away culture are hugely important in what I do. In the sense that I’m striving to distance myself from them as much as humanly possible. As much as cycling seeks to be (and is) part of the remedy to our environmental ill health, it is still a massive, global industry with a heavier footprint than you might think.
Brother Rothar offers bespoke and complete bicycle refinishing, customised builds, repairs as well as a deep cleaning and maintenance service. For refinishing I use Spray.Bike paint, which is a CFC free, acrylic-based powder coat aerosol paint made specifically for painting bicycles (and anything that isn’t flat) due to its minimal-drip and quick-drying properties.
