2 Day Workshop

Intro to 3D Printing

An Introduction To 3D Printing // Sundays August 18 & 25 // 10:00 - 17:00

Flux Studios Dublin presents a new introductory course on 3D printing, where participants will acquire practical knowledge on the techniques and processes of 3D printing, creating and modifying their own objects with dedicated software.

Tutor: Tadhg Charles
Date: Two full Sundays, August 18 & 25
Participants: 10 max
Level: Beginners
Cost: €150

The outcome of this course is to provide participants with an overview of the workflow, software, and technical requirements for scanning and printing 3D models.

Participants can have minimal technical understanding but should be comfortable using a computer.  All aspects of the process will be explained clearly from the software to the hardware allowing individuals further exploration on there own terms. All participants will leave with a printed model and a good base to further explore the medium.

This workshop is for participants with some computer skills it explores how 3d printing can be used as a creative medium.  It uses a series of open source applications and requires a laptop to take part in.  The main objective is to push the creative understanding of participants. We take a simple form such as a cube, cone or sphere and then elaborate on it through multiplication and modification creating elaborate shapes of engaging interest.  These are then refined and edited to ensure they can be printed.

The first day will begin with an introductory talk, exploring what it is that the participants want to get out of the course.  We will then introduce you to the functional pipeline which would take them through the printing process.

This will cover:

  • Explaining file creation

  • Exploring how to work with digital assets.

  • Loading the work

  • Processing the files

  • Preparing digital assets

  • Ensuring files are suitable for printing

  • Exporting the digital models

Day1:

  • Introductions

  • Course outline

  • Intro to different software used

  • Digital software for object creation

  • Working with objects

  • Tea break!

  • Loading and processing

  • Editing preparing for printing

  • How to open work in different software and understanding file formats

  • 3d printing g-code generation and exporting files

Day 2:

  • Discussing the created prints and exploring alternate possibilities offered by the medium

  • Editing elements of the digital files for different results

  • Understanding how the g code set up can affect output conditions

  • Break for tea

  • Revaluating creation processes to allow for a clearer understanding of the method and technique

  • What options are there to manage catalogues of digital assets

  • Working with archives and libraries to understand resources availability and dissemination

  • Short recap of software

  • Concluding with a discussion of 3d printing what options the studio can offer and exploring what might be the most advantageous method for participants to further their utilization of the technology.

What Do I Need To Bring?

  • A note book

  • Access to a computer or laptop

  • Access to various open-source software (access to which will be explained in advance)
